This study delves into the creative process of contemporary freehand flower-and-bird painters, with a particular focus on the integration of Zen thought into their artistic practices. Through interviews with artists, a profound connection to nature was unveiled, highlighting its beauty, impermanence, and the philosophical notion of interconnectedness—themes central to Zen teachings. These themes are vividly expressed in the choice of subject matter, predominantly featuring elements like birds, flowers, and bamboo, each imbued with symbolic Zen meanings; for instance, bamboo signifies resilience, while cherry blossoms represent the transience of life. Significantly, the artists consciously avoid projecting human emotions onto these subjects, adhering instead to the Zen principle that respects the inherent 'life force' within nature. This respect is further illustrated in the aesthetic choices made within their artworks. The use of negative space is pivotal, mirroring the Zen concept of 'emptiness' and offering viewers a space for contemplation about the relationship between the subject and its surrounding void. This aesthetic choice encourages a meditative viewing experience, reflective of Zen meditation practices. The palette of muted colors chosen by the artists also contributes to an atmosphere of peace and harmony, reminiscent of the tranquil environment of a Zen garden. Furthermore, the intentional incorporation of asymmetry and the celebration of imperfections within the artwork embody the principle of wabi-sabi, a core aspect of Zen aesthetics that finds beauty in the flawed or ephemeral. The fusion of these artistic techniques with Zen philosophy not only enhances the aesthetic value of the paintings but also deepens the spiritual engagement by inviting contemplation and reflection on broader existential themes. This study highlights how contemporary art can act as a conduit for spiritual and philosophical exploration, enriching the viewer's experience by connecting them more deeply with the elemental truths explored through Zen thought.
